<image:caption>The clients for this desert retreat near Los Angeles requested that their weekend home be practical, indestructible, and beautiful. Minimal maintenance was an important factor in all decisions. A minimal choice of materials therefore seemed appropriate. With the exception of the carpeted bedrooms, all of the floors are the same white terrazzo tile. The walls are all the same color white; the three bathrooms have the same tiles, fixtures, and fittings. What sounds like a recipe for boredom instead has the opposite effect. The simple palette has the impression of making the home seem larger than it really is: the overall feeling is one of calm repose.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>This modest mid-century home in Hollywood had good bones but was in need of a renovation. In both practical and poetic terms, the house also required a new attitude towards the charming backyard and spectacular views of Lake Hollywood and the Hollywood sign. The new layout is an open, informal arrangement of rooms. Everything was simplified, clarified, refined. Unnecessary door frames, moldings, and little hallways were eliminated so that space now floats around corners. Lines of sight were extended to the outside, and full-height windows and doors and skylights were added to further unite the interior and the exterior. In the process, a small, dark house became a light-filled gem. The remodeled home is contemporary, while retaining a strong connection to the earth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>This oceanfront Santa Monica pied-a-terre is the home away from home for an American family living mainly in Paris. The original apartment layout was dense and dark, with several rooms extending back from the ocean view. In the course of renovation, the unit was totally opened up into a loft-like space. Even the kitchen at the rear of the building now has light and air and a beautiful ocean view. A gently curving wall separates the public from the private areas of the house. It is also the main organizing element of the plan, suggesting literally and figuratively a path to the sea. The interior palette has clean and relaxing pastel colors – blues, greens, violets – the changing colors of the sea. It is the ideal atmosphere for a vacation home in Southern California.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Venice Multi-Family The 27th Avenue Home is a multi-family contemporary building with a tenant space at the ground level and a owner’s home at the upper level. Although the house sits a few meters away from ocean it does not get ocean views except for on the roof level that has been turned into a outdoor living space. The concept was to create an efficient house that makes use of this small lot by providing functional spaces for its residents. By limiting the interior finishes to a small pallete a simple yet elegant look is achieved.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>This project consists of a small addition and the extensive remodel of an existing two-story Tudor style home in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. For the most part, dark colors and finishes were replaced by lighter, brighter hues. The plans of the first and second floors were opened up, sight lines were extended and lines of axis were developed. A new, large kitchen was designed with an adjacent children’s playroom and a nearby TV room.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This 40 wide x 120 deep property is located near the beach in Venice, CA. The zoning in this area allows two units on the property so the decision was made to build two single family homes. The larger, more private home is located at the rear of the property; the smaller structure fronts the street. A courtyard serves as the outdoor area for the rear house. Both structures are comprised of two stories.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Beach House is a summer house for a client who values a quiet time away from the busy city. The single story house sits on top of a hill overlooking the Pacific Highway and the ocean beyond, the layout is designed with two wings flanking a linear infinity pool that sits on the edge of the outdoor deck, The two wings consist of a guest wing and a main wing which allows for privacy between the rooms, the rooms open up to the pool patio which acts as the common space for the house’s residents while providing unobstructed views out to the ocean. The residence features a basement level accessed from the outside, with a gym area, sauna and a wine cellar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 27th Avenue project is a duplex residence on a quiet walk street in Venice, CA, just doors away from the Pacific Ocean. Each unit has two bedrooms. The lower unit has a private garden, the upper unit has a second double-height living room and a rooftop deck with view of the water and the Santa Monica mountains. The warm white walls, bleached floor, the high ceilings and softly curving forms give the upper unit a sense of quiet, warm elegance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Stone Canyon</image:title>
<image:caption>Completion Date Spring 2023 The scope of this project in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles consisted of a remodel and addition to an original Colcord home. From 1924 to 1984 the Beverly Hills-based architect, Gerard R. Colcord, created a significant legacy of over three hundred homes in southern California. This home was designed in the architect’s signature style – the sprawling, country colonial farmhouse. The property once belonged to the current owner’s parents. Because he grew up in the home, every square inch of it has special meaning and sentimental value to the owner. Each room is packed with a lifetime of memories. It was important to maintain this meaning and at the same time to update the house for a new generation. Although a new second story wing was added over the garage, much effort was made to maintain the character and detailing of the original house. Our project is a careful balance of remodel, restoration and addition. The newly finished house resonates with charm and familial sensibility; it is a comfortable counterpoint to the mega-mansions of today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Completed 2012 The Screening Room Building is an addition to a large residence in Beverly Hills. It is in effect a separate, free-standing building which is connected to the Main House by a covered arcade. The new building along with the existing residence and the covered arcade form three sides of a new rose garden. The yard to the South side of the Screening Room contains a landscaped golf green and practice area. The new structure is just less than 3,000-square-feet and houses a 35mm digital cinema screening room for sixteen people. There is also a lounge, a projection room, a garden hallway and a large double-height dance studio gym.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Trousdale Estate</image:title>
<image:caption>Project Completed 2014 This project called for the complete renovation of a 5500 square foot existing home in the Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills, California. Paul Trousdale bought 410 acres of the unbuilt property from the Doheny Estate in 1954 and soon after began developing sprawling view properties limited to single-level homes. This property sits near the top of a cul-de-sac road and enjoys roughly 270° spectacular views of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. The original house was designed in 1962. Curved and circular elements are repeated motifs that can be found throughout the original design.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Montecito Mediterranean Residence</image:title>
<image:caption>Completion Date 2009 The project includes an extensive remodel of a single story Spanish colonial style home in Montecito and a reworking of the two-acre lot surrounding the structure. The home’s original layout had certain weaknesses that were addressed in the remodel –doors, walls and islands were altered, relocated or removed to strengthen axes of circulation throughout the plan. A new lighting system and some new, very light window treatments were used to bring more natural light into the home. What was once a series of very closed off, dimly lit spaces (a piano room, a breakfast nook and a TV room) was brought together as a large entertainment space overlooking the pool and back yard through the removal of the interior walls that once divided the rooms.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Modern Family Home</image:title>
<image:caption>Completion Date 2011 This project consists of a two-story, 5,000-square-foot single family residence and guest house on a 12,000-square-foot property in Venice, California. The property is large for this section of Los Angeles, making it nicely sized for a young family of four. The first floor plan is in the shape of a long bar and has an open arrangement of public rooms all looking on to the western half of the property. The living room is a double-height space. The exterior areas are comprised of a front garden, a private garden, an exterior covered area and various concrete deck areas, a sports court, and a swimming pool and spa.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Brentwood Master Bedroom</image:title>
<image:caption>The owners of this home requested that their bedroom be transformed. The existing bedroom, with its attached sitting room and small office, was large and had tall ceilings, but it lacked details and any elements that gave it a sense of scale. The solution was to panelize the walls and to apply moldings to the large expanse of ceiling area. The mirror behind the bed reflects the view of the garden from this second-story room.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Completion Date 2007 This small architectural gem sits in the rear garden of a traditional brick and clapboard home in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. The new structure houses a state-of-the-art screening room, projection booth, lounge, and bar on the first floor. A large private gym and a guest suite are located on the second level. The neo-colonial architectural elements of the exterior reflect the style of the existing main house, while the lounge interior is clubby and comfortable, and the screening room is sleek and modern.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Honolulu Residence</image:title>
<image:caption>Completion Date 2024 This new home is situated on a spectacular, fourteen-acre property within a designated conservancy area overlooking a wide expanse of Honolulu. The site offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor including downtown Honolulu, Waikiki and, on a clear day, the North Shore of Oahu. The two-story house, limited by conservancy rules to 5,000 square feet, was designed to take advantage of the ocean views and prevailing winds. Virtually all the major rooms, with the exception of the library, face the ocean views to the southwest. The library looks onto an altogether different landscape – a leafy, green, tropical forest to the north. The house design was conceived as a kind of contemporary barn. The client desired simple, clean, uncluttered spaces that would allow nature and the amazing views to be the main characters in the story. The exterior materials include native volcanic stone and a dark-stained, vertical wood siding. The idea is that the house should blend into its verdant surroundings. Accessory features of the site include a swimming pool, a pool powder and changing room “tower”, a barn and a water catchment facility.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ongoing Project This residence is situated in Hollywood Hills on a 3-acre oasis of green and with unobstructed views of the city below. The project is a remodel of a single story house into a three story home with a detached studio building, the building is designed to allow free access from and to the surrounding landscape from all stories - creating special moments as the landscape is brought close to the building. The studio building is a separate structure that sits atop the hill at a higher elevation, providing a sanctuary and a creative work space for the owner.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Arch house</image:title>
<image:caption>Symbolic of optimism and renewal, the distinct geometry of Arch House communicates resilience of spirit, as well as structure. The home’s repeating arches recall Mediterranean-style landmarks, including the Palisades’ cherished Getty Villa. Likewise, they adhere to the design clarity and idealism of early California modernism as exemplified in the work of Irving Gill. Fluent in this distinct architectural patois, Arch House visually grows from local roots and soars toward the future, while beautifully framing and embracing the natural site. Three bedrooms in the two-story, four-bedroom Arch House overlook a garden. But nature is not simply a “view” from the home. Nature fully integrates with everyday family rituals. Sunlight fills the pavilion-like dining room, which juts into the garden, flanked by two glass walls. With the doors open, shared living spaces extend fully outdoors, erasing any delineation between indoor and out. A sustainable cross-ventilation system allows the home to breathe in the ocean air. At the home’s entrance, a small fountain marks the passageway into this tranquil environment—a nod to California’s Golden Era, past and future. Designed mindfully for future generations, with non-combustible materials, the home easily adapts to different lifestyles and aesthetic preferences. Entirely customizable with different finishes and details, the Arch House sits comfortably on a 50 ft. x 130 ft. lot, a common lot size in the Palisades’ Alphabet Streets. Visually iconic, the design is direct and bright, emphasizing shared family spaces and experiences, with open, interconnecting rooms. Balancing the home’s strong social thread, the upstairs bedrooms provide a peaceful, private retreat. As part of a new generation of Case Study houses, the Arch House is designed with full awareness of responsibility and possibility. Among its many durable features are a sense of home and place. We are proud to be one of the 40 visionary architectural firms participating in Case Study 2.0, a revival of the historic Case Study House Program. We’re providing aesthetically refined, fire resilient architectural plans to empower communities impacted by the fires to rebuild beautifully, resiliently, and affordably. Designed for a changing world and the future of living. This is the remaking of home.</image:caption>
